How long have you been working with Shopify and how did you get started developing Shopify sites?
I’ve been working with Shopify since 2012. It was a banner year for Girl Skateboards, where I am Web Director / Developer, because our latest skate video premiered. The company, which was founded in 1993 by director Spike Jonze, two pro-skaters and their friend, is well-known for their cutting edge skate videos. They hand not made the transition to selling directly to consumers online yet. I was brought on to find an easy to use but also nimble and customizable e-commerce platform where we could sell the video and related apparel. It was a huge success, and I’ve built dozens of Shopify online stores since then.
Would you describe yourself as a developer, designer or both?
Both. I really like using both sides of my brain – it makes me feel balanced. I am also a digital marketer and occasional photographer. I have a digital studio in Santa Monica called Bahia Designs, and we help clients all over the world not only with web design and development but also with SEO, Social Media Marketing, photo shoots and web video production. My favorite projects are those where we are involved from conception through launch and marketing.
Care to share your favorite recent Shopify Project?
Sure! I loved working on the Crailstore, because of the unique challenge of designing a site to sell three different brands – each with a distinct personality – all under one roof. The idea was to make it a one-stop-shop for everything Crailtap related. Crailtap is the name of the distribution company that includes Girl Skateboards, Chocolate Skateboards, Royal Skateboards, Fourstar Clothing, Royal Skateboards, and Lakai Footwear.
What is your favorite feature of Shopify/what makes it a platform you like to develop for?
I really like working with Liquid, because it allows you to do a lot of fun filtering and conditional programming. The theme editor is also well designed. It’s easy to make changes to the theme’s code thanks to the color coding and error checks.
What would you say is the most important tip or piece of advice you give your customers launching new Shopify sites?
The most important thing to remember when launching a new site is to continue creating content, adding new products, and marketing the products through social media channels and email newsletters. Collecting emails through an incentivized pop-up is a great way to build an email list. And a history of content is great for SEO – for ranking highly in search engine results. When everything is working together, you’ll be surprised at the momentum you’ll generate to optimize sales.
