Please tell us a bit about yourself and what you sell at E & M Apothicaire.

After being diagnosed with Rhematoid two years ago, and losing my mom to complications of R.A. just a year prior, I decided to take things into my own hands and not fall victim to “big pharma”. I got right with my diet, and started eliminating products from our household that would or may interefere with my progress. It started with just a few skin care products, dishwasher pods and laundry soap. Eventually friends and family were suggesting we try selling our goods and telling my story to local markets. We were an instant hit! You don’t realize how many people out there suffer from auto-immune diseases or have allergies and sensitivities that make using everyday products a challenge. We have been able to make women feel beautiful by providing them a bar soap they can use, or skin care and makeup that actually nourishes their skin rather than irritating it and compounding issues.

When did you start selling online? Why?

We opened our online store late last summer. After tirelessly promoting our goods and services at the local farmers markets, we wanted to have a larger outreach, more information available online and be able to feature all the products we make rather than having to select what we wanted to showcase at the market on any particular day.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in building and running E & M Apothicaire?

The biggest challenge was making people aware that we are here! We are a no-name brand in comparison to national brands of the same type. We found that using online services, free classes and tutorials through our local chamber of commerce, word of mouth, and email campaigns have brought more people to us than not doing anything. We are still not being viewed as much as we like, but with time and progress through SEO, we will be up there in no time!

How do you attract new customers?

We use sales funnels and promo campaigns to get customers to come to us. It’s a slow but steady process, and that’s all we can ask for. So far Bizzy gained us sales in less than 25 hours, so we are pleased that we made the time to investigate and put their services to use.

Can you share a tip or something interesting you learned in the process of building and running E & M Apothicaire?

The best advice we can give is to not be afraid to try something new and to not give up if it’s not working. Move on and try something else. Most of the time, we learned what works through trial and error. Also, Shopify is fantastic and using the apps in the App Store has grown and enhanced our website in ways we never could have done on our own.
