Please tell us a bit about yourself and what you sell.
Hi I’m Holly Clegg — a national best-selling cookbook author who is passionate about food! My goal is to inspire healthier home cooking with my 30 minute recipes. I attended the Cordon Bleu Cooking School and have sold over 1 million cookbooks. I would consider myself a culinary expert on easy, healthy and practical recipes – especially since I test, taste and photograph all of my recipes.
My trim&TERRIFIC® cookbook series includes everyday cookbooks such as KITCHEN 101, Gulf Coast Favorites and Too Hot in the Kitchen. My more health-focused Eating Well cookbook series includes Eating Well Through Cancer, Eating Well to Fight Arthritis, and Diabetic Cooking with the American Diabetes Association. I include nutritional information and highlight diabetic-friendly and gluten-free recipes in all my cookbooks. Why am I different than other cookbook authors? I give you easy options to your favorite recipes with affordable ingredients you probably already have.
When did you get started selling online? Why?
People don’t have time to go to book signings and bookstores anymore. My cookbooks have always been available on Amazon and B&N.com; however, I wanted to direct people to my blog to find information on my cookbooks and see sample recipes. The proof is in the tasting! With online sales, I can offer 20-25% discounts on my books, and also everyone has a direct, easy source to find the cookbooks.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in building and running your business?
Today, every celebrity, reality star, musician and actor has written a cookbook and there are cooking shows and online recipes everywhere. When I started promoting my healthy cookbooks years ago, there wasn’t this competition. Now, I market my cookbooks through social media platforms and email marketing; which has been working really well.
My biggest challenge is to create the awareness of my cookbooks for the consumer, special sales for corporate gifts, and corporate wellness. On my website, I am able to provide books to sell and information about my corporate wellness program in this competitive market.
How do you attract new customers?
I appear on television, write for websites and magazines, as well as send out direct emails and newsletters with Bizzy to my customer list. I also offer recipes with beautiful photos on all social media platforms with direct links to my site. The first part is getting the customer to my site, have them to sign up for my newsletters and lastly, purchase my cookbooks. I saw a huge difference in sign-ups by using Privvy with different sign up-forms as Jen at Bizzy suggested.
Can you share a tip or something interesting you learned in the process of building and running Holly Clegg?
First, promotions are an ongoing job without a start and a finish. My end goal is to sell cookbooks, however, I find the best way to sell my cookbooks is to market them through recipes and my gorgeous food photography. The customer looks to see what book the recipe is from and then purchases the book. I am able to highlight recipes to target audiences with more success using Bizzy, and I am so pleased with the success over direct sales that I am able to achieve.I am able to highlight recipes to target audiences with more success using Bizzy. - Holly Clegg Click To Tweet
