In this week’s Shop Spotlight, we asked Aaron from jimmyCASE to share his Shopify experience and best tips for selling online. Keep reading for some great insights and, and if you’re looking for a way to simplify your life…trust us and start with a perfect wallet phone case!
Tell us a bit about yourself and what you sell.
Before starting jimmyCASE, our founder Dan Smith worked as a TV executive (American Gladiators, ABC Family). He was always frustrated carrying his wallet in one pocket and his iPhone in another — on the set, going through airport security, or just sitting down with his stuffed pockets. He kept thinking to himself, wouldn’t it be great to simplify life and get rid of your wallet?
Out of this simple need and his love of clean, premium materials, like custom-made fabrics and genuine mahogany, the jimmyCASE was born. After a successful Kickstarter campaign funded a move to a factory in East Los Angeles, Dan left his TV career to make jimmyCASEs full time. Our mission is simple: to make a fun, functional and exceptionally well-crafted wallet case that simplifies your life.
When did you get started selling online? Why?
We immediately saw the benefit of selling our cases through an ecommerce platform. The accessibility of our products available to our customers and the margins we are able to achieve through an ecommerce site made the decision to focus on our online business an easy one.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in building and running your shop?
There are many challenges we face on a daily basis: among the bigger ones are how to attract new customers to our website and bring back returning ones, configure our desktop and mobile sites to optimize conversions, and scale our business so that we are constantly growing. We have engaged in a myriad of solutions for these difficulties, including SEO optimization, email retargeting through Bizzy, web and social media retargeting ads, and through the expansion of our retail infrastructure.
How do you attract new customers?
The first way is by making a really great product and standing behind it. We find that a happy customer with a jimmyCASE out in the world is pretty much our best sales tool. We have our phones with us everywhere we go, and a jimmyCASE on a table at a cafe is very good at catching people’s attention! And of course, we’re always working to grow our SEO, engage in social collaborations and promotions with other interesting brands and online sales platforms, and expand further into retail. We find that being in more stores (we’ve recently joined up with places like the AT&T Flagship Store in Chicago and Fred Segal in Japan) also drives additional traffic to our website.
Can you share a tip or something interesting you learned in the process of building and running your shop?
Always, always pay attention to Google Analytics! Listen to the data.
When designing and refining your online store and marketing materials, focus first on things that will help conversions — as opposed to things that only look cool, but won’t necessarily give your customers the specific information they need at that crucial moment to make their purchase.
