In this week’s Shop Spotlight, we asked Nicola from The Accessory Barn to share her Shopify experience and best tips for selling online. Keep reading for some great insights and, and if you’re looking for a super comfortable pair of shoes, The Accessory Barn is the place to go!
Tell us a bit about yourself and what you sell.
I am English and have been living in the United States for 14 years. I was a stay at home mom who found a pair of Grandco Sandals while on holiday about six years ago and just had to have more of them because they were so comfy. When I couldn’t find them back home, I decided to start selling them and now The Accessory Barn is the biggest online seller of this brand.
When did you get started selling online? Why?
I started out doing shows, but it was taking me away from my family too much. So, after doing a lot of research, I opened up my online store, The Accessory Barn, in 2010.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in building and running your shop?
Marketing is one of the biggest challenges that comes in so many different forms – from social media, to blog posts and email marketing. It takes a lot of time to keep up with it all. I have tried to automate what I can with Bizzy, which has been a massive help with my email marketing.
How do you attract new customers?
I create Facebook ads, AdWord campaigns, and social media posts. On The Accessory Barn Facebook page, I ask people who like the page to share my content with their friends. I also join pages on Facebook to share my business. To support my email marketing, I’ve added pop ups on my site to get new people onto my mailing list.
Can you share a tip or something interesting you learned in the process of building and running your shop?
Never think that building a website is easy and that once it is online people will flock to buy from you. That philosophy couldn’t be further from the truth. It is constant hard work – but enjoyable and rewarding!
